Medical Directives.
A medical directive is the document that speaks for you when you can't speak for yourself. It tells doctors what kind of care you do and don't want, and it names the person you trust to make medical decisions on your behalf. Every adult should have one.

What a medical directive covers.
A complete medical directive typically includes three things, working together to make sure your healthcare wishes are clear and legally enforceable.
Living Will
Your written instructions for end-of-life care, including life support and resuscitation preferences.
Healthcare Power of Attorney (Healthcare Proxy)
Your written instructions for end-of-life care, including life support and resuscitation preferences.
HIPAA Authorization
Gives your chosen agent and family the legal right to access your medical records and speak to your doctors.
Why it matters.
Without a medical directive, your family may need to go to court to get the legal authority to make decisions on your behalf at exactly the moment they're least equipped to deal with paperwork. Worse, the decisions made might not reflect what you actually would have wanted.
A medical directive is one of the simplest, most important documents in any estate plan. It costs very little to prepare and can spare your family enormous stress.
Who should have one?
Every adult, regardless of age or health. Medical emergencies don't check ID. Young, healthy adults need these documents just as much as retirees, because in a true emergency, doctors and hospitals will look for written authority before they'll talk to family.
Young, healthy adults who think they don't need one yet
Parents who want a trusted person to act in an emergency
Retirees and anyone managing ongoing health conditions
Anyone who wants their end-of-life wishes honored, not guessed at
How Savon handles it.

Frequently asked questions.
Q.
Is a medical directive valid in other states?
Generally, yes, most states honor a directive properly executed in another state, though some have specific witnessing requirements. If you split time between your state and another state, let us know during your consultation and we'll address it.
Q.
Can I change my mind later?
Absolutely. You can revoke or update your medical directive at any time. We recommend reviewing it every few years or after any major life event.
